Blocked Drains Bronte

This part of the coast sits inside a steep gully that runs straight down to the beach, and the streets on either side climb hard back up from the sand.

That shape decides how the suburb drains, long before any pipe goes into the ground.

Federation and inter-war cottages built into the hillsides have mostly been through a knockdown-rebuild or a heavy renovation by now, but the drains underneath often haven't kept pace with the house above them.

Falls that were adequate for a smaller 1920s cottage get asked to carry a lot more water once an extension or a second storey goes on.

A heavy coastal storm pushes a lot of water down that same gully in a short burst, and the older stormwater pipe behind the foreshore simply wasn't sized for that kind of volume arriving all at once.

Add windblown sand off the beach working into any drain with an existing gap in the joint, and you get the two failure patterns that show up here again and again: a stormwater line that surcharges in a downpour, and a sewer line that silts up quietly in between.

Most of the housing here is a mix of families and long-term owners rather than a purely rental turnover, which we notice in a practical way: a lot of these homes have had one plumbing history, not several tenants' worth of quick fixes stacked on top of each other.

That matters when we're trying to work out how old a section of pipe actually is versus how old the house looks from the street.

Bronte House sits where the gully meets the park, a Gothic-style cottage from the 1840s with gardens that run down into Bronte Gully itself.

It's one of the oldest structures on this stretch of coast, and it's a useful marker for how long people have been building drainage into this particular fall of land.

Bronte Baths, the ocean-fed saltwater pool tucked under the southern headland, and the surf club above it on Bronte Road have been drawing salt spray across the nearby streets since the club was founded in 1903.

Homes on Murray Street and Gardyne Street, set back from the beach but still inside the gully's catch, get the same salt-laden air as the foreshore properties without always getting the same attention to their external fittings.

Boundary Street, running along the edge near Waverley Cemetery, sees a similar mix: older stock that has never been fully renovated, sitting next to knockdowns with all-new plumbing.

Calga Reserve, a small pocket of green tucked into the residential streets above the beach, and the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk passing along the clifftop both sit on the same sandy, undulating ground that runs right through the suburb's drainage.

The gully, the salt air and the renovation wave between them shape most of the calls we get out here.

That's not incidental on a slope like this one. We already have a fair idea what a camera will find before it goes anywhere near the drain.
